The family holds about one-third of Rohm and Haas Co., the Philadelphia specialty chemicals maker that their relative co-founded.

On Thursday, Dow Chemical Co. announced that it had agreed to buy Rohm and Haas for more than $15 billion in cash. The Haas family's 65 million shares became worth nearly $5.1 billion based on the acquisition price of $78 per share.
