Africa Plans Biggest Dam Project

Meetings in London will look at how to finance the $80bn (£40bn) cost of the Grand Inga project in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The idea for the project, which would be built on the Congo River, was conceived in the 1980’s but was put aside at that time due to political turmoil. It would produce 320 terawatt hours of electricity annually and would hopefully boost African electricity supply by a third. Opponents of the project doubt that Africa’s poorest will benefit.

The World Energy Council (WEC) hopes that funding for a feasibility study will come in soon so that construction could begin as planned in 2014.
