The
Food and Drug Administration will receive a 12% increase in its budget for the
coming year. The agency, which regulates 80% of the country’s food, had a drop
of food supply inspections of 78% over the past 35 years. The growing volume of
imports and inadequate funding had resulted in the loss of 1,000 food safety
staffers in the past ten years. The problem has been highlighted by several
high-profile food recalls in the past year.
Critics
have argued that increases of 15% in each of the next five years are needed to
ensure food and drug safety.
