The aproach outlined buy this presentation is based on Economic reasoning and follows these four steps:

  • The new metric is based on economic reasoning, but it does not require economic calculation.
  • Economic reasoning means that we consider benefits as well as challenges of volunteer involvement, and that we seek a positive return on our investment in volunteers
  • Estimating the monetary costs, and especially the benefits, of volunteer involvement can be difficult
  • Our new metric, instead, weighs the advantages volunteers bring to the organization against the challenges their involvement creates
