A majority in each of 46
countries surveyed said that international trade was a positive force,
according to the Pew Global Attitudes Project survey.
There was a difference in the
approval numbers between developing countries and countries that have
experienced rapid trade-based growth, and advanced Western countries. Support
for trade has actually decreased in Germany,
Britain, France, and Italy,
and most notably, the U.S.
Since 2002, the number of Americans claiming that “trade is good” dropped by 19
percent. “G.D.P. (gross domestic product) growth hasn’t been as dramatic in
these places,” said Andrew Kohut, president of the PewResearch
Center.
Majorities in all countries
agreed that environmental protection should be a high priority. Majorities in
most countries noted that their traditional way of life was being lost.
