San Francisco's Hanson Bridgett became a certified green business a few
months ago. The process took about a year, and the law firm has had to
change the way it did things. Much came down to basic human behavior, like convincing people they
really didn't need to print that memo or to drink water from a plastic
throw away bottle. There were larger issues as well: the company had to work closely
with building management to fix things like changing that toilet

complains, point out (gently) that greening the workplace is a proven
way to boost morale, productivity, and profits. Just call it the
ultimate investment, with future returns that include, well, having a
future.
Every day an average of four construction workers are killed as they go about building America.
When miners, firefighters and law enforcement officers are killed in
the line of duty, their stories become news. We hold vigils and we
mourn their loss publicly -- as we most certainly should. Yet when
construction workers are killed, their tragedy too often goes
unnoticed, as if the cost of building America must be injury or death
on the job.
Never doubt what a group of thoughtful business students can achieve when challenged by their "environmentalist" professor.
Soccer moms step aside. In this year's campaign working-class voters
have elbowed you aside as the demographic group that candidates covet
most.
As Barack Obama and John McCain seek to outmaneuver each other in
wooing John and Jane Punchclock, the question that leaps to the fore
is, what do working-class voters want?
