Better late than never, I suppose -- though LA's planned 2010
citywide ban still seems downright meek given that San Francisco,
Australia and, yes, even China
have already or are in the process of implementing a ban. And, of
course, it's important to note that this plan will only go through if
(and it's a big if) the state fails in its attempt to impose a 25-cent
surcharge.

The California Building Standards Commission announced on Friday the unanimous adoption of a statewide “green” building code, the first in the nation. newly adopted green building standards will help California achieve the goal, mandated in Assembly Bill 32 signed into law by Schwarzenegger two years ago, of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2020.

In Belgium, the European Commission was considering several
proposals related to purchases and consumerism that would
support eco-friendly products, innovation and new technology. Under the proposals, local authorities within the European Union
would have to make half their purchases more eco-friendly by 2010, and
the number of product types subject to eco-labelling would increase
from the current 26 to as many as 50 by 2015.
Ronald Luri’s boss, Jim Bowen, had in firing him cited “inadequate performance
and failure to follow the directives of his superiors,” according to
court documents. Luri’s lawyers pointed to an email that was found to
have been tampered with by Bowen, who added extra paragraphs ripping
into Luri’s job performance. This piece of evidence struck a chord with
the jurors.

A Portland jury just awarded plaintiffs $28 million in a class-action antitrust lawsuit against North American
lumber company Weyerhaeuser. The jury said that the company violated
antitrust laws through high prices and buying unnecessary amounts of
lumber.
Several local bottled water companies and manufacturers worry that the new measure will boost costs and delay sales. While the measure has won praise from environmentalists, some analysts say it could violate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) by unfairly restraining international trade

federal agencies to buy PCs and computer monitors that are energy efficient and
include reduced levels of toxic chemicals -- a requirement that likely will
affect corporate users as well because of the government's massive buying
